Training Workshop on Climate Changes and Environment Consequence in CPEC Region November 8-11, 2022 Beijing, China (online and offline) I Background The construction of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (aka., CPEC) is the demonstration and flagship project of the Belt and Road Initiative. It aims to strengthen and enhance the all-weather strategic cooperative partnership between China and Pakistan, which not only has a strong role in promoting the development of China and Pakistan, but also optimizes Pakistan’s regional dominance in South Asia. However, CPEC has the characteristic of a large elevation gradient because it passes through the western margin of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and through the intersection of the three major mountains, the Himalayas, Karakoram and Hindu Kush. Under the influence of special topography, climate and hydrology, the ecological environment is extremely fragile and vulnerable to natural disasters caused by global climate change. Since June this year, due to climate change, Pakistan has suffered from flood caused by rainfall, with more than 1033 people killed, over 1500 people injured, 33 million people affected and 71958 head of livestock killed, and even a large amount of farmland flooded. Pakistan has declared a nationwide state of emergency. In addition, Pakistan Water Tower, as an important part of the World Water Tower, is located in the upper Indus River, which has the largest valley glacier area in the world. The change of glacier reserves in this region has an important influence on the regional climate and even the world climate. In recent years, Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences (aka., ITP), the co-constructor of China-Pakistan Joint Research Center on Earth Sciences (aka., CPJRC), has carried out a lot of cooperation in the fields of climate change and westerly-monsoon interaction, cryosphere evolution and environmental effects, and hydrological and ecological evolution in cold regions with Pakistan National Meteorological Service and other institutes, and also many research achievements has been made. In order to further promote the climate change and environmental effects research in CPEC, promote the popularization of cutting-edge knowledge, and lay a good foundation for future cooperation, CPJRC and ITP jointly work to hold this Training Workshop on Climate Changes and Environment Consequence in CPEC Region, in Beijing, from November 8 to 11, 2022. II Objective Experts from Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences will be invited to give lectures. The workshop aims to enhance the cooperation between China and Pakistan in climate change and environmental effects and the popularization of related cutting-edge knowledge. III Courses 1.
