Hertford College was founded in 1282 – it is one of the oldest of Oxford University’s 39 colleges. Located in the centre of historic Oxford, our beautiful college boasts the Bridge of Sighs, which is one of the most famous sights of the city. This is an ideal setting for students wishing to improve their language skills and knowledge of Britain and British culture. Hertford College Residential Advisors (RAs) will meet you. Travel to Oxford by private coach. You will stay in Oxford University Accommodation. On arrival: Supper and welcome information. 9.00 –10.30am English Language assessment: Day 2 Monday Students complete a placement test. Speaking activities Teachers and students meet in an informal setting for a chance to get to know each other before the programme formally begins. 11.00 – 12.30pm B R E A K Presentation: Oxford University and the Tutorial System The lecture is followed by a Q and A session. You will have the chance to ask questions about the admissions process to Oxford and other British universities. Management and Leadership: theories and practice Day 3 Lecture followed by discussion and activities Tuesday 2.00-4.00pm Evening L U N C H Welcome Tea at 3.30pm L U N C H Out and About Tour of Discovery Sample a delicious and traditional cream tea in the splendid surroundings of Hertford College’s historic dining hall. A self-guided exploration of the hidden corners of Oxford. D I N N E R Orientation: D I N N E R Cultural activities with RAs Accommodation Facilities Connecting your computers to the internet (Suggestion: College tour - visit some of Oxford’s most renowned colleges) © Copyright Hertford College, Oxford Theories of Motivation Day 4 Wednesday How to inspire and motivate a team. Lecture followed by activities and discussion Introduction to presentations Day 5 Thursday How to plan and deliver a presentation effectively. We look at planning and structure, engaging the audience, tips and techniques and materials. Students choose a topic related to management or leadership. L U N C H Team building group activity L U N C H Introduction to London Students work in groups to complete a mini-project. The process and results will then be discussed and analysed. Tomorrow you will visit this fascinating city. In this session, we introduce and explain the most famous sights and artistic treasures. D I N N E R Cultural activities with RAs D I N N E R Cultural activities with RAs (Suggestion: attend an evening lecture at The Oxford Hub – a student-run organisation focusing on charity and volunteering at Oxford University) (Suggestion: watch a Shakespeare play in an Oxford College garden) Study Visit: London Day 6 Friday You will spend the day in Central London visiting the British Museum, Trafalgar Square, Big Ben and the River Thames at Westminster Bridge. You will also see no. 10, Downing Street, the residence of the Prime Minister. © Copyright Hertford College, Oxford Weekend Day 7 Saturday At the weekend you have free time. If you wish to stay in Oxford, your RAs are available for Oxford activities, such as punting, walking tours, shopping, college and museum visits. Alternatively, some students choose to travel independently to a nearby place of interest such as: London Stratford upon Avon Warwick Castle Cambridge Bath Brighton Liverpool These trips are not included in the programme price. Your RAs are available to offer advice and support about travel arrangements. Day 9 Monday We look at the opportunities and challenges facing todays’ jobseekers 11.00 – 12.30pm B R E A K Workplace English Job seeking skills Applying for a job: Writing successful personal statements and CVs/Resumes Workshop: Ethical issues in the workplace Day 10 Tuesday Discussion, problem-solving and activities. A range of ethical issues will be examined, ranging from the personal to the corporate Pronunciation workshop: Day 11 Wednesday Connected speech in natural English: noticing and practicing assimilation and elision B R E A K Advanced level presentation English Presentations workshop: Language check Body language and communicating with your audience 2 – 4pm Evening L U N C H British Culture L U N C H British Culture: Multicultural Britain L U N C H British Culture: The media and communication Society, family and lifestyles Discover the history of immigration to the UK and the influence this has had on culture and lifestyles Learn about Britain’s press and practice the language of journalism D I N N E R Cultural activities with RAs D I N N E R Cultural activities with RAs D I N N E R Cultural activities with RAs (Suggestion: intercollegiate sports evening) (Suggestion: go to a gig - jazz, blues, rock, pop - in Oxford with your RAs) (Suggestion: listen to classical music at the Sheldonian Theatre or in an Oxford College or take part in a music session with RAs) © Copyright Hertford College, Oxford Day 12 Thursday Lecture: Organisational Behaviour An introduction, followed by discussion and activities B R E A K Academic debating skills The language of debate: expressing your opinion and defending your ideas politely yet effectively Mini debate in groups L U N C H A lecture in preparation for the study visit tomorrow.
