This is the area in which Professor Han Qide has recorded outstanding achievements and distinguished himself as world-renowned scientist. Professor Han is an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Academician of the Third World Academy of Sciences, and the President Elect and Executive President of the International Pathophysiology Society. He is also the Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, the Chairman of China Association for Science and Technology, the Chairman of the Central Committee of the Jiu San Society, and the Director of the Peking University Health Science Centre. Professor Han was born to a family of noble scholars in Shanghai in 1945. Since his early years he longed to become a doctor helping people fight diseases. In 1962 he successfully entered Shanghai No.1 Medical College (currently Fudan University Medical College) and graduated in 1968 with distinction. The following decade saw Professor Han working persistently and devotedly as a local clinician at a country hospital in Lintong County, in the province of Shanxi of northwest China. In spite of the forbiddingly harsh conditions and scarce resources, Professor Han set up basic health care facilities from scratch and did all he could to relieve patients’ suffering. Many a time he had to work for days and nights all by himself to care for the critical cases. All this won him deep love and respect from the locals he ser ved. In 1979, after graduate education was revived in China, Professor Han entered Xi’an Medical College (currently Xi’an Jiaotong University Medical College) to study with Professor Lu Yu, an eminent academic, thus starting his career of research in pathophysiology. Later in 1985, Professor Han went to study in Emory University in the US. He was the first in the world to prove that the α1- adrenoceptor consists of two subtypes: α1a and α1b. These subtypes display differences on agonist-induced desensitisation, signal transduction and proportions in various tissues. These findings were published on the Nature and the Molecular Pharmacology attracting worldwide attention. Later, Professor Han carried out a systematic research on the distribution network of adrenalin receptor, their interactions and physiological and pathological significance. In 2006 Professor Han won the Woodruff Prize Award by Emory University, an award that represents the highest honour in medicine and is reser ved to those who have made re-defining contributions to the development of life science. Professor Han Qide has also been concerned with integration of scientific studies. Recently, he has been devoted to the study on transit of the bio-mono molecular within a cell and its biological significance. He is also studying the adjustment of the distribution network of adrenalin receptors, using complicated yet systematic methodology. Professor Han has published over 50 papers in international journals and over 200 papers on Chinese Science Citation Index (CSCI) journals. His published papers have been referred to more than 1,700 times by the journals collected by SCI. Professor Han is also the winner of various national awards for science and technology progress and natural sciences. Due to his vast contributions to pathophysiology, Professor Han Qide was elected Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1997, Academician of the Third World Academy of Sciences in 2001, and the President of the International Pathophysiology Society in 2006. Professor Han has been proactive in promoting reforms in medical education and health care in China. He has devoted himself to foster talents in science and technology, particularly in the field of medicine and public health. Equally tremendous are his contributions to the popularisation and modernisation of China’s education. As Director of the Health Care Centre and Vice President of the Peking University and in resonance with the university’s 100-year tradition and its mission of building up a first-class international university, Professor Han took up the responsibility to train numerous students to become important health care professionals and researchers in medical sciences. Among them include many master’s students, doctoral and postdoctoral students. Professor Han has achieved substantial results in creating synergies between scientists and scholars. The many innovations that resulted from this collaboration stand testimony to his efforts. He is an active promoter of international academic exchanges. He is also a great advocate for the combination of preclinical medicine with clinical application, modern medicine with Chinese traditional medicine, and scholarship with industry. His immense contributions to the development 43 of Chinese medicine, as well as popularisation and advancement of science have led to his election as Chairman of China Association for Science and Technology in 2006. Since the preparatory stages of establishing the Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences (ICMS) in our University, Professor Han Qide has been playing an important and active role in the negotiations of the collaboration agreement. After the Institute was jointly set up by our University and the Peking University, Professor Han became the Chairman of the Academic Council and Honorary Director of ICMS. Professor Han has furthered the cross-disciplinary studies integrating medicine, economics, juridical science and business administration. He has also led important research projects, super vised international inter-disciplinary cooperation and selected over ten outstanding students from the Peking University to join the Master’s degree programme jointly offered by University of Macau and Peking University. Thanks to the support and assistance from Peking University and efforts of Professor Han to develop UM’s graduate education, our scientific research, laboratory construction and international co-operation have all begun to bear fruits. The above has demonstrated Professor Han’s pursuit in the career of medicine and his tremendous academic achievements to education. We all are proud to have Professor Han Qide among us as an exemplary scholar and educator. Mr. Chancellor, I would ask that you add to the honours bestowed on this remarkable scholar, Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, by conferring the Degree Doctor of Science, honoris causa, upon Professor Han Qide.
