VCU Winter 2015 Program DAY 1: Sunday , Jan 25 Late Afternoon Arrival to Richmond International Airport VCU provides transportation from airport to VCU campus. 6pm – 8pm Residence Hall Check -In & Welcome Dinner DAY 2: Monday, Jan 26 9am – 11am Campus Orientation & Walking Tour 3pm – 5pm University Life Activity: Understanding US Academic Culture Students will discuss the importance of autonomy, initiative, and integrity in American higher education. We will discuss the roles and responsibilities of faculty and students; the nature of critical thinking, reading, writing, classroom participation, group work, lectures, seminars, and exams; and sources of academic support on most US university campuses. DAY 3: Tuesday, Jan 27 9am – 4pm Cultural Excursion: Visit Thomas Jefferson’s historic home, Monticello and hike in the Virginia mountains. DAY 4: Wednesday, Jan 28 10am – 12pm University Life Activity: Adjusting to US Culture/Avoiding Culture Shock Students will learn about basic values and characteristics of Americans, such as organization, honesty, justice, privacy, and humor. This workshop will provide a forum for students to discuss how to recognize culture shock, ways in which different people react to it, and strategies for avoiding culture shock. 2pm – 4pm Topic Lecture: US Constitutional Law, John Aughenbaugh DAY 5: Thursday, Jan 29 10am – 12pm Topic Lecture: Successful business models 2pm – 4pm Experiential Learning Building Activity : Richmond/VCU Scavenger Hunt and Team 6pm – 9pm Cultural Excursion: Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Tour the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts’ many art collections including African, American, 21 st century, and Ancient art (plus much more!). There will also be a live Jazz Concert in the museum’s Best Café. DAY 6: Friday , Jan 30 9am – 3pm Experiential Learning: Children’s Miracle Network Fundraiser 1 DAY 7: Saturday, Jan 31 Day Trip Cultural Excursion: Day Trip to Washington, DC DAY 8: Sunday , Feb 1 9am – 5pm Visit Colonial Williamsburg and shop at outlet malls DAY 9: Monday , Feb 2 10am – 12pm University Life Activity: Career Exploration Students will explore career options, consider their own work values, and discuss strategies for jumpstarting their careers even while in college. 2pm – 4pm Topic Lecture: Hollywood Culture, Emilie Raymond DAY 10: Tuesday, Feb 3 10am – 12pm University Life Activity : Roundtable Discussion on Student Life Issues Participants will meet current VCU students (domestic and international) to discuss campus life - student organizations, campus safety, wellness, academic expectations, etc. 2pm – 4pm Topic Lecture: Generalist Social Work Practice, Frank Baskind DAY 11: Wednesday, Feb 4 10am – 12pm Topic Lecture: Mental, Emotional, and Behavioral Disorders, Rosemary Farmer 2pm – 4pm University Life Activity : Applying to U.S. Universities Students will learn about American university admissions processes, required standardized tests, available scholarship/financial aid opportunities, immigration concerns, and how to write a winning personal statement. DAY 12: Thursday, Feb 5 Day Trip Cultural Excursion: Trip to Virginia Beach DAY 13: Friday, Feb 6 10am – 12pm Topic Lecture: Clinical 1pm -5pm Shopping at Short Pump Town Center 6pm – 8pm Farewell Reception Social Work Practice, Joseph Walsh DAY 14: Saturday, Feb 7 DAY 15: Sunday, Feb 8 Afternoon Depart Richmond International Airport to return home PLEASE NOTE: This program schedule is tentative.
